Roberts drew this view of Nablus, the town built over the ruins of ancient Shechem in the hill country between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim, during his tour of the Holy Land in 1839. The lithograph was made by Louis Haghe from Roberts's on-the-spot sketch and published in London by F.G. Moon as part of The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia, issued in parts between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's travels produced some of the most widely circulated European images of the region, and his careful rendering of the town's stone houses and surrounding hills helped shape how British readers pictured biblical places.
