Few sites in the Holy Land carry as much scriptural weight as the well outside Shechem, which tradition links to the patriarch Jacob and which the Gospel of John places at the scene of Jesus's conversation with a Samaritan woman. David Roberts sketched it on April 17, 1839, near the town now called Nablus, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into this color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London by F. G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's plates were widely admired by Victorian readers who could not make the journey themselves, and this view gives a sense of the site as he found it.
