Roberts sketched this view of the gateway to Nablus, the ancient town of Shechem in the hills of the West Bank, on April 17, 1839, during his tour of the Near East. The lithograph was later drawn by Louis Haghe and published in London between 1842 and 1845 as part of Roberts's six-volume set The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia. Haghe's hand-colored finish gives the stone walls, the crowd and the travelers in the foreground the warm, dusty light that made Roberts's views popular with Victorian readers who would never see the region themselves.
