Few images in David Roberts's Holy Land series capture the everyday texture of travel as directly as this view of an encampment at Jericho, dated April 1, 1839, when Roberts was making his sketches in the region. The lithograph shows pilgrims gathered in camp on the plain beside the ancient city, a setting long associated with the biblical story of Joshua and the walls of Jericho. Roberts's drawings were translated into color prints by Louis Haghe and published in London in parts between 1842 and 1845, so the scene reached European readers as a record of Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land during the nineteenth century.
