Dated April 3, 1839, this view of Jericho records a place Roberts reached during his tour of the Holy Land that spring, when he sketched the scene on location. The lithograph was made by Louis Haghe and published by F.G. Moon in London between 1842 and 1845 as part of *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*. Roberts's travels produced some of the most widely circulated European images of the region, and his careful drawing of the landscape and ruins helped shape Victorian ideas of biblical lands. The color plate is worth noticing for its warm light on the desert hills.
