The date in the title, April 2, 1839, places this view of the Jordan within the tour David Roberts made through Egypt, Nubia and the Holy Land in 1838 and 1839. Roberts sketched the scene on the spot, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into a color lithograph. It appeared in the second volume of *The Holy Land*, issued in parts by F.G. Moon in London between 1842 and 1845. The series brought the biblical landscape to a wide Victorian audience that was eager for accurate images of places they knew only from scripture.
