The tomb pictured here is the traditional burial place of Joseph, the son of Jacob, at Shechem, the town now called Nablus in the West Bank. Scripture says the bones Israel carried out of Egypt were buried there (Joshua 24:32), which has long made the site important to Jews, Samaritans, and Christians alike. David Roberts sketched it on his 1839 tour of the Near East, and Louis Haghe turned the drawing into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London in parts between 1842 and 1845. Such prints gave European readers a view of biblical places at a time when few could travel there.
