Few portraits of Oscar Wilde from his American tour are as widely reproduced as the studio work of Napoleon Sarony, the New York photographer named in this copyright line. Wilde lectured across the United States in 1882 on the aesthetic movement, and the portraits made during that tour helped turn his public image into a fashion in its own right. This albumen print on a card mount reflects the small-format portrait style popular in the 1880s, when readers and admirers collected likenesses of writers and performers.
