Napoleon Sarony, a New York studio photographer, made this albumen portrait of Oscar Wilde on a card mount around 1882, the year Wilde toured the United States lecturing on aesthetics. Wilde was already known for his flamboyant style, and Sarony's studio sittings helped shape a public image of the young Irish writer as a figure of deliberate elegance. The copyright line naming Sarony shows how photographers of the period registered their images to guard against unauthorized copying. Albumen prints on card mounts were the standard format for commercial portraits in the 1880s.
