Few portraits of the period are as recognizable as this albumen print of Oscar Wilde, taken by the New York photographer Napoleon Sarony around 1882, the year Wilde toured the United States lecturing on aestheticism. The card mount and copyright notice mark it as a commercial studio product, sold to admirers who wanted a likeness of the young poet and wit. Sarony was among the most fashionable portrait makers of his day, and his studio gave Wilde a theatrical pose and polished lighting that suited his public persona. The image is worth studying as an early example of a writer deliberately shaping his own celebrity through photography.
