Oscar Wilde sits for this cabinet card portrait by Napoleon Sarony, the New York photographer who turned out many of the period's most recognizable studio likenesses. The image dates to about 1882, the year Wilde toured the United States lecturing on the Aesthetic movement, and it captures the carefully cultivated image he brought with him across the Atlantic. Sarony's albumen print on a cabinet card was a popular format of the 1880s, sold and collected as a keepsake of celebrities and public figures.
