Napoleon Sarony, a New York studio photographer, made this card-mounted albumen portrait of Oscar Wilde around 1882, the year Wilde toured the United States and Canada lecturing on aesthetics. The copyright line and the "No. 17" marking show that Sarony registered the image for sale, which was common for celebrity portraits of the period. Such cartes and cabinet cards circulated widely among admirers and the press, helping make Wilde a recognizable figure of the aesthetic movement well before his later fame as a playwright.
