Napoleon Sarony, a New York photographer known for theatrical and celebrity portraits, made this albumen print of Oscar Wilde, and the copyright line and exhibition note show it was sold as a commercial image. Wilde was in America in 1882 on a lecture tour on aesthetic design, and his cultivated, fashionable look became part of his public persona. Portraits like this one circulated widely in the period, helping to make Wilde a recognizable figure well before his later fame as a playwright.
