Taken around 1882, during Oscar Wilde's lecture tour of North America, this card portrait came from the New York studio of Napoleon Sarony, who was known for photographing actors and other public figures. Wilde, then a young champion of the Aesthetic movement, was touring the United States and Canada and sat for many photographers. Sarony registered his images for copyright, as the printed notice on this mount shows, and sold them in multiple sizes. The albumen print on a card mount reflects the popular format of the period, when such portraits were collected and exchanged like calling cards, which helped turn celebrities into familiar faces.
