Oscar Wilde's head and shoulders are the focus of this albumen card portrait by Napoleon Sarony, the New York photographer who made some of the most recognized celebrity images of the 1880s. The print carries a copyright notice and a numbered Copyright Office entry, which show Sarony registering his studio work as a commodity. Wilde was then touring the United States and Canada on a lecture circuit about the Aesthetic movement, and portraits like this one were sold widely to fans eager to see the flamboyant young writer. Its card mount and albumen process typify the commercial photography of its era.
