The sheet advertises a touring production credited to the Illinois theater, "Ben-Hur," Klaw & Erlanger's stupendous staging of Lew Wallace's 1880 novel about a Jewish prince in Roman Judea. William Young's dramatization turned the novel's chariot race into the play's central spectacle, and the New York producing partnership of Marc Klaw and Abraham Erlanger was known for lavish touring shows. Strobridge Lithographing Company of Cincinnati printed the color lithograph in 1901, and its copyright notice shows how such posters were made to promote productions to audiences across the country.
