This large color lithograph advertises *The Black Crook*, a production that opened at Niblo's Garden in New York in 1866 and became one of the most influential stage spectacles of the nineteenth century. It combined a melodrama with an elaborate ballet and special effects, and it toured for years, with revivals and road companies drawing audiences well into the 1880s. The poster was printed by the Forbes Company of Boston, a lithography firm known for theatrical advertising. Its text differs slightly from a smaller version of the same design, which suggests the printer adjusted the wording for a different format or engagement.
