Chicago printers turned out a steady stream of theatrical lithographs in the 1880s, and this one carries the Chicago imprint of the National Printing & Engraving Co., with its date given only as the 1880s. Robert Louis Stevenson's novella about a respectable doctor's dark double appeared in 1886 and was adapted for the stage almost at once, so the subject was fresh when this poster was made. Color lithography at this size, roughly 72 by 107 centimeters, was the main way to catch passersby's eyes outside a theater, and the bold graphics show how printers pitched a shocking story to audiences.
