Few stories had more staying power on the nineteenth-century stage than the legend of a scholar who trades his soul for knowledge and youth, and this Chicago poster shows how that story was sold to American audiences. The sheet was printed by Shober & Carqueville, a Chicago lithography firm that produced color posters for theatrical productions and local businesses in the late 1880s. Goethe's drama, published in 1808, and Charles Gounod's opera of 1859 both drew on the legend, so the subject would have been familiar to many viewers. Posters like this were meant to be read from across a street, which explains the bold color and large lettering.
