John Gielgud, the English actor and director, is shown here in a halftone print that the Library of Congress dates loosely to somewhere between 1930 and 1950, the years when he rose from a promising stage performer to one of the most admired classical actors of his generation. Gielgud spent much of that period on the London and New York stage, known for his precise, musical delivery of Shakespeare and for roles in modern drama. Halftone reproductions like this one were the standard way newspapers, magazines and theater programs circulated actors' likenesses in those decades, so the print also reflects how stage celebrity was packaged for the public.
