This color lithograph poster advertises *Faust*, the story of a scholar who bargains his soul to the devil, a tale audiences had seen on European and American stages for generations by 1888. The Chicago firm Shober & Carqueville produced it around that year, when American lithographers printed bold, large-format theater bills to draw crowds. The poster was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, a step many commercial print makers took to protect their designs.
