Oscar Wilde posed for this albumen card portrait by the New York photographer Napoleon Sarony, whose studio made some of the most widely circulated celebrity images of the period. Wilde was then touring the United States on a lecture circuit, and cabinet cards and panel cards like this one were sold to fans eager for a likeness of the author and aesthete. The copyright notation on the mount, credited to Sarony, shows how commercial such portraits were in the 1880s. Look closely at the pose and the careful lighting, which reflect the theatrical self-presentation Wilde cultivated.
