Here the sitter is the Irish writer Oscar Wilde, photographed by the New York studio of Napoleon Sarony around 1882, the year Wilde toured the United States lecturing on the Aesthetic Movement. The albumen print is mounted on a cabinet card, the sturdy format that made studio portraits popular collectibles in the 1880s. Sarony was among the best-known portrait photographers of the era, and the record's copyright notice shows he registered the image himself, a sign of how valuable celebrity likenesses had become. Wilde himself was a deliberate performer of his own image, and this sitting captures the polished, self-assured persona that made him a sensation on the lecture circuit.
