Napoleon Sarony's New York studio made this card portrait of Oscar Wilde around 1882, during Wilde's lecture tour of North America on the aesthetic movement. Sarony issued a widely circulated series of Wilde sittings, and the numbered mount and copyright line show how studios sold and protected such images. Albumen prints on card mounts were the standard commercial portrait format of the period. Wilde's carefully staged appearance in these sittings helped make him one of the most recognizable faces of the decade.
