This poster advertises a stage production built around Nancy, the young woman in Fagin's gang whom Bill Sikes kills in Charles Dickens's novel *Oliver Twist*, serialized in 1837 and 1838. Dickens drew her as a working-class figure in the London underworld, and the subject tags on the record point to the period's concern with women's labor and poverty in England. The poster was printed by the Calhoun Print Co. in Hartford, Connecticut, in the 1880s, when Dickens adaptations were a staple of American theater. Its color woodcut style was typical of the bold, eye-catching bills that theaters used to draw audiences.
