Two Pittsburgh movie houses share this sheet: the Davis theater at Smithfield and Oliver streets, and the State theater on Fifth Avenue, across from the Grand Opera House. Rendered in ink around 1930, the drawing is part of the Library of Congress's architectural and engineering holdings, which preserve plans of buildings from this period. Its pairing is telling, since the late 1920s and 1930s saw cinemas multiply in downtown districts, drawing audiences that had once filled vaudeville houses and legitimate theaters. The placement of a movie house beside an established opera house reflects how entertainment in the city was shifting.
