This ink drawing shows the Loew's Aldine theater at the corner of Liberty Avenue and Ninth Street in downtown Pittsburgh, dated 1932. Unlike a photograph of the finished building, it records the design intentions that architects and builders worked from, so it shows the layout and structure before the theater was in use. It belongs to the Library of Congress's architecture, design and engineering holdings, which preserve many drawings of movie palaces from the 1930s. Loew's operated a large chain of such theaters, and the Aldine reflects the period when lavish picture houses were built as public destinations as well as places to see films.
