Few places in Pittsburgh were as tied to the city's 1920s entertainment boom as the stretch of Penn Avenue near Sixth Street, where this ink drawing locates the Academy Lyceum theater, later known as Loew's Lyceum. Unlike a photograph, the sheet shows the building as its designers planned it, with plans and elevations made before the house opened to the public. Such drawings were prepared for the architects, engineers, and builders who worked on a project, so they reveal layout decisions that later photographs often miss. Movie houses of this period were often built to hold large crowds for both films and live shows, which makes these records useful for understanding how the city's theaters were designed.
