Three downtown Scranton theaters share this ink drawing: the Gaiety, a burlesque house on Penn Avenue; the Academy on Wyoming Avenue; and the Capitol, also on Penn Avenue near Spruce Street. Drawn around 1930, the sheet reflects an era when burlesque, vaudeville and newer motion picture houses operated within a few blocks of one another in the city's commercial core. Its measured linework is typical of architectural and engineering records, which documented building layouts in precise detail. Such drawings preserve spatial information about theaters that photographs often leave out.
