A skeleton figure dominates this silkscreen poster for the Federal theater Project's production of Christopher Marlowe's *Doctor Faustus*, staged in New York City. The Federal theater Project was part of the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal agency that put unemployed artists and performers to work during the Depression. Its poster designs came from the Federal Art Project, whose silkscreen unit made bold, flat, multicolored images that were cheap to reproduce and easy to read from the street. The skeletons suit a play about a scholar who trades his soul for knowledge and power and meets death and damnation at the end.
