Few stage works of the 1930s connect as directly to modern life as *RUR*, Karel Čapek's 1920 Czech play that introduced the word "robot." This poster advertises a marionette staging of it under the Federal theater Project, the Works Progress Administration unit that sponsored live drama and puppet shows for working audiences. The director credited here, Remo Bufano, was a puppeteer who treated marionettes as serious performers. The 1936 silkscreen design uses flat, bold color and simplified forms, a style typical of WPA poster art.
