Oscar Wilde poses in this albumen portrait on a card mount, made by Napoleon Sarony, the New York photographer known for his studio portraits of celebrities in the 1880s. The copyright line shows that Sarony registered the image himself, which let him control and sell copies of his sitters. The picture dates to around 1882, the year Wilde toured the United States lecturing on aestheticism, when his velvet coats and long hair made him both a sensation and a target for caricature. Sarony's studio portraits of Wilde were widely reproduced and remain among the best-known images of the young writer.
