Drawn in ink in 1933, this sheet documents the New Columbia theater in San Francisco, a house carrying the name of A. L. Erlanger, the New York producer who held a major stake in American theater in the early twentieth century. The Library of Congress holds it among its Architecture, Design and Engineering drawings, and its subject headings note both legitimate theaters and motion picture houses, a mix common in the 1930s as stage and film shared many venues. Working drawings like this one show how a building was laid out before construction, and the careful linework would have guided builders in a city still feeling the effects of the Depression.
