The drawing shows two Orpheum theaters in Los Angeles at once, the "New Orpheum" and the older "Orpheum," which the title identifies as a modern vaudeville house. That pairing is what sets this sheet apart from other theater drawings in the collection. By 1935, vaudeville was in decline as motion pictures drew audiences away, so many houses of this kind had been adapted to show films alongside live acts. Architectural drawings like this one were used to plan a building's layout, seating, and stage, and they offer a record of how a downtown entertainment palace was meant to work during the Depression years.
