Two houses share this 1935 ink drawing: the Orpheum and the New Orpheum, both in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Orpheum name belonged to a national vaudeville circuit that built and operated theaters in western cities in the early twentieth century. By the 1930s, sound films were drawing audiences away from live stage shows, and many such houses were remodeled or converted to movies, which explains why the catalog lists both theaters and motion picture theaters as subjects. As a plan from the Depression years, the sheet documents how a downtown theater was laid out during that transition.
