This ink drawing records two theaters in Salt Lake City, the Orpheum and the New Orpheum, as they stood in 1935. Its title pairs the two buildings, so it shows a theater and its successor side by side, not a single house. The Orpheum name tied the buildings to the national Orpheum circuit, which ran vaudeville and later film programs in cities across the country. In the 1930s, movie houses were the dominant form of public entertainment, and drawings like this one document how downtown theaters were planned and adapted for that audience.
