Few pictures on this board are architectural plans, and this ink drawing shows two downtown Los Angeles theaters as they were designed in 1935. The title pairs the New Orpheum with the older Orpheum and describes the work as "Modern Vaudeville," a nod to the stage shows that filled American theaters before sound films took over most programs. During the 1930s, Los Angeles grew into a major film center, and many downtown houses were remodeled to host both live acts and movies. Drawings like this one, made in ink on paper, served builders and now preserve a detailed record of how these buildings were laid out.
