Market and Taylor streets in San Francisco was the site of the Loew's State theater, one of the large movie houses that lined the Market Street corridor in the 1930s. This 1938 ink drawing records the building at a time when film palaces were central to city life, drawing crowds to downtown for double features, newsreels and stage shows. Because it is a drawing rather than a photograph, it shows the design and layout as the architects and draftsmen intended them, which makes it useful for studying how theaters of the period were planned. Its subject headings place it within a wider group of San Francisco theater records from the 1930s.
