Loew's State theater at Broad and New Streets in downtown Newark is the subject of this ink drawing, one of the Library of Congress's architectural and engineering sheets dated 1928. The building was one of the large movie palaces that Loew's, the national theater chain, put up in the 1920s, when sound pictures and lavish interiors drew audiences to city centers. Drawings like this one record the planned layout, elevations, and details of such a house before construction, and they show how theaters of the period were meant to impress patrons as much as screen films. Newark's downtown was then one of the busiest shopping and entertainment districts in New Jersey, so the theater's location at a major intersection mattered as much as its design.
