This 1919 ink drawing documents Jacob's Columbia theater and the New Orpheum theater, which shared a site at Washington and Marchell Streets in Newark, New Jersey. The Orpheum name points to the vaudeville circuit that operated theaters across much of the country in those years. Newark's downtown filled with theaters like these in the 1910s, as live stage shows and motion pictures competed for the same audiences. Because the drawing sits among architectural and engineering records, it offers a useful look at how these buildings were planned.
