The Illinois theater in Chicago is named on this playbill, which announces a run of the stage version of Lew Wallace's 1880 novel *Ben-Hur* beginning September 2. The dramatization, adapted by William Young, was known for its large-scale spectacle, especially a chariot race staged with live horses. Touring companies carried the production to cities well beyond New York, so local playbills like this one show how the story reached audiences far from Broadway. The bold type and crowded layout reflect the commercial lettering of the period, meant to catch passersby on busy city streets.
