Few buildings in Chicago carry the weight of the Auditorium complex on Wabash Avenue, which pairs a large theater with a hotel under one roof. Designed by Adler & Sullivan and completed in 1889, the Auditorium Building was celebrated for its acoustics and for Louis Sullivan's ornamental interiors. This 1936 ink drawing comes from the Library of Congress's architecture and engineering holdings, and its subject headings tie it to the 1930s, when Chicago's large houses were adapting to motion pictures and changing audiences. The record does not say what work the drawing documented, so its exact purpose is best read from the drawing itself.
