The Granada theater at Sheridan Road and Devon Avenue was a neighborhood movie house on Chicago's North Side, and this ink drawing, dated 1933, records its design in the precise linework of an architectural and engineering sheet rather than a picture of the building in use. The Library of Congress holds it in the Architecture and Engineering collection, which gathers plans, elevations and details that show how buildings were laid out and constructed. Chicago's theaters of the 1920s and 1930s, built as the movies drew huge crowds, were often lavish, and drawings like this one preserve the structural and decorative choices behind them. Looking closely, you can see how the drafter planned the sightlines, entrances and facade.
