Here Oscar Wilde sits for the New York studio of Napoleon Sarony, whose portraits of him became some of the most widely circulated images of the young writer. The photograph dates to about 1882, the year Wilde toured the United States and Canada lecturing on the Aesthetic movement, and Sarony's studio was well known for capturing the theatrical poses and fashionable dress of its sitters. This albumen print on a card mount carries Sarony's copyright notice, a sign of how the studio protected its popular portraits. The image was later shown in the exhibition *Oscar Wilde: the Apostle of Beauty*.
