Here the sitter is Oscar Wilde, photographed by Napoleon Sarony, the New York studio whose cabinet and panel cards were among the most widely sold celebrity portraits of the early 1880s. Wilde was touring the United States and Canada on a lecture circuit about the Aesthetic movement around 1882, and Sarony's studio produced several poses of him in that period, many with the velvet jacket and flowing hair that became his trademark. The albumen print on a card mount reflects the mass-produced portrait format of the day, which fans collected and traded much as they later collected trading cards. The card's copyright notation shows it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, a detail that marks it as a commercial product of the studio.
