Few portraits of Oscar Wilde from the early 1880s are as widely reproduced as the studio work of Napoleon Sarony, the New York photographer who made this card mount, marked No. 5. Wilde was touring the United States and Canada that year, lecturing on the aesthetic movement, and studio portraits like this one were sold to fans and newspaper readers eager to see the young writer whose dress and manner drew so much comment. The albumen print on card shows the commercial portraiture that made celebrities visible in the period, and its staging reflects the deliberate self-presentation Wilde cultivated at the time.
