Oscar Wilde sits for this albumen card portrait by Napoleon Sarony, the New York photographer whose studio made some of the most widely circulated celebrity images of the 1880s. Wilde was touring America as a lecturer on aesthetics around 1882, and Sarony's studio photographed him at the height of that fame, when his flamboyant dress and languid poses were the subject of newspaper caricatures. The card mount and copyright notice mark it as a commercial portrait, sold to fans and collected in albums of the period. It is a useful record of how a writer's public image was built through photography.
