Two female figures holding a blank scroll, carved in low relief, are the subject of this photograph of a sculpture inside the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The Library's Thomas Jefferson Building, completed in 1897, was decorated throughout with allegorical figures, murals, and carved ornament meant to celebrate learning and the arts, and this sculpture fits that program. A blank scroll suggests knowledge still waiting to be written, a theme well suited to a national library. The caption card gives no date, so the year the photograph was taken is uncertain.
