Visitors entering the Main Hall on the first floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building faced a grand marble-and-mosaic space that led toward the Main Reading Room beneath its great dome. The building opened in 1897, and its ornate decoration was meant to show that a national library could be as impressive as the government it served. The card for this print gives no date, but the view shows the hall's formal entrance, with its decorative stonework and tiled floors, as the public would have approached the reading room.
