This design shows the reading room hall and gallery sections of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the building that was first called the new Congress Library and later named the Jefferson Building. Its cross-sections reveal how the great domed reading room was layered, with tiers of galleries rising around the central floor, a plan meant to bring books close to readers. Construction ran through the 1890s, and the library opened to the public in 1897 as a showpiece of American ambition. Studying the sections shows how the architects tried to combine an ornate public space with the practical demands of storing and retrieving a growing collection.
